How old is your dog, really?
The “× 7” rule is folklore. This modern epigenetic-inspiredestimate follows how canine aging changes over time — and it changes with your dog's size.
A few small questions. The maths takes care of itself.
Why the old × 7 rule is wrong.
The seven-year shorthand treats every year of a dog's life as equivalent. It isn't. A puppy's first year compresses roughly fifteen human years of development — infancy, childhood, and adolescence stacked into twelve months. After that, aging slows dramatically and diverges by breed size.
In 2019, researchers at UC San Diego found that canine and human aging follow a predictable logarithmic relationship when mapped through DNA methylation — the chemical clock on our genes. The formula used above is a simplified version of that work, adjusted for the well-documented fact that small breeds outlive large ones by three to five years on average.

Lifespan, by size.
Averages from large-cohort veterinary studies. Individuals vary — these are the curves, not the verdicts.
| Size | Adult weight | Avg lifespan | Senior from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toy | < 10 lb | 14–16 yrs | 10 yrs |
| Small | 10–25 lb | 13–15 yrs | 10 yrs |
| Medium | 25–55 lb | 11–13 yrs | 8 yrs |
| Large | 55–90 lb | 9–11 yrs | 7 yrs |
| Giant | > 90 lb | 7–10 yrs | 6 yrs |
Asked, answered.
Do small dogs really live longer than large dogs?
+
Yes. On average, a toy breed lives 14–16 years while a giant breed lives 7–10. Larger dogs age faster because their cells divide more during rapid growth, accelerating cellular wear.
When is my dog considered a senior?
+
It depends on size. Toy and small breeds become senior around age 10–11, medium breeds around 8–9, large breeds around 7, and giant breeds as early as 6. Your vet can confirm based on weight trends and bloodwork.
Can I slow down my dog's aging?
+
You cannot stop aging, but you can influence how well your dog ages. Lean body weight, consistent exercise, dental care, mental stimulation, and regular vet checks are the four levers with the strongest evidence behind them.
How do I calculate a mixed-breed dog's age?
+
Use your dog's adult weight as the guide. A 45 lb mix should be calculated as a medium breed, regardless of ancestry. Weight at maturity predicts lifespan more reliably than genetics alone.
Is my dog's mental age the same as their physical age?
+
Not always. Cognitive decline typically begins a year or two after physical senior status. A mentally sharp 12-year-old can still be physically arthritic; a physically fit 10-year-old can show early cognitive changes. Track both.
